Three crosses in WC opener
Ayew had three crosses (one accurate) and one chance created in Wednesday's 1-0 victory versus Panama.
Analysis: Ayew started up top for Ghana's opening match of the World Cup, the third World Cup of his career. Despite starting at striker -- and captaining the team -- he did not even take a shot in the match, partially because he was acting as more of a creative option and partially because the Ghana attack did not create many chances. He finished the match with three crosses and one chance created and was subbed off for Prince Adu in the 87th minute. Ayew has now made seven World Cup appearances but has yet to score, and that will be more difficult now with two difficult remaining group matches versus England and then Croatia.
Set for major role
Ayew is in line for a lion's share of the set-pieces at the 2026 World Cup with Ghana.
Analysis: Ayew normally has a split of sets alongside Mohammed Kudus, but with Kudus (quad) out for the tournament Ayew could be in line for most or all of the set-pieces. He earned a single assist last time out in the World Cup, but this is a much better attacking unit on the whole, though still with a defensive mindset. Ayew is coming off six goals and three assists in the Championship, his best goalscoring season since 2019.
