Wild appearance and goal
Arnautovic logged one goal on two shots (two on goal) and one chance created across 45 minutes during Austria's 3-1 win Tuesday against Jordan.
Analysis: For the Austria-Jordan game, instead of Arnautovic, Austria manager Ralf Rangnick used Sasa Kalajdzic up top. But after he logged a disappointing half, Arnautovic entered the matchup. During the 68th minute, Arnautovic temporarily logged Austria's second goal, assisted by Stefan Posch. But after a VAR review, Arnautovic's goal was disallowed because Posch had previously handled the ball. Fortunately for Arnautovic, VAR extended the game enough for Austria to log a penalty from Salim Obaid's stoppage-time handball. The subsequent spot-kick was successfully converted by Arnautovic, now with 48 goals for Austria's national team. As the Austrians' oldest player, at 37 years of age, he remains their most reliable forward up front, and his current form backs it up.
Focal point of Austria's attack
Arnautovic has been named in Austria's World Cup squad and is expected to lead the attack throughout the competition as the nation's all-time record scorer.
Analysis: Arnautovic contributed across the Serbian Super Liga and Europa League campaigns with Red Star Belgrade this season, recording 10 goals and nine assists across all competitions. The veteran brings unrivalled international experience and the goalscoring instinct that has made him Austria's most prolific scorer of all time, and coach Rangnick trusts him as the central target man around whom the Austrian attack is built. Arnautovic heads into what is his first and almost certainly his only World Cup with the motivation to lead Austria on the biggest stage of his career.
