Targeting six-week return

Butland (elbow) is targeting a return in around six weeks following surgery, significantly earlier than his initial three-month recovery estimate, according to coach Sergej Jakirovic. "He's a superman. This is how he feels, so we will see."

Analysis: Butland's recovery appears to be progressing encouragingly after the elbow injury initially threatened to keep him sidelined for around three months. A six-week return would represent a considerable improvement on that original timeline, although he remains unavailable against Aston Villa on Saturday and still has several weeks of rehabilitation ahead. Konstantinos Tzolakis should continue to benefit from Butland's absence in goal.

Could miss 12 weeks with injury

Butland has sustained a problem in his arm and is expected to require surgery while facing a long absence, potentially heading to the sidelines for the next 12 weeks or even until December. Coach Sergej Jakirovic commented that Butland "has an elbow injury which he picked up in training. He will go to see another specialist, and then we will know more after he's seen this examination. Yes, I am concerned about it.", Barry Cooper of the Hull Daily Mail reported Saturday.

Analysis: Butland had arrived in the summer transfer window as Hull's projected starter in goal, so this issue is a major concern for the club heading into the 2026/27 season. While his timeline hasn't been confirmed, he already missed a friendly game against Eintracht Frankfurt, with Konstantinos Tzolakis getting the nod on that occasion. Assuming the injured player is not available for the initial stages of the EPL campaign, Tzolakis might see a few opportunities in his place, although there's still time for the club to look for another signing.

Signs for Hull City

Butland has joined Hull City from Rangers on a two-year contract with a club option for a further year, the club announced.

Analysis: Butland made 55 appearances across all competitions last season, playing every minute of Rangers' Scottish Premiership campaign as part of a three-year stint at Ibrox that produced 157 total appearances and the Scottish League Cup in his debut season, along with the club's Player and Players' Player of the Year awards. Butland brings more than 450 senior career appearances to Hull, including 87 Premier League outings spread across Birmingham City, Stoke City and Crystal Palace, and becomes the Tigers' first summer signing as they prepare for their return to the top flight. The nine-time England international is expected to be Hull's undisputed number one goalkeeper as the club looks to establish themselves in the Premier League under coach Sergej Jakirovic.
