Assists off bench in WC opener
Gonzalez (strain) delivered one assist from his lone scoring chance created as a substitute in Tuesday's 3-0 win over Algeria.
Analysis: Gonzalez regained fitness in time to appear in the initial World Cup clash, replacing Thiago Almada in the 55th minute. Shortly after that, the 28-year-old set up Lionel Messi's third goal through a low pass, opening his assisting count in the big event. Gonzalez should now be a serious contender for the starting spot on the left flank, where he's a dangerous distributor and may also rack up occasional shots as part of a dominant side.

Gonzalez (strain) will be available for the World Cup opener against Algeria on Tuesday, according to TyC Sports.
Analysis: Gonzalez, who has been tested at left-back at times during the pre-tournament friendlies, was a doubt for the WC debut but has been training in full in recent days. It remains to be seen whether he'll start, and which role he'll fill, but at the very least, he'll be an option off the bench for manager Lionel Scaloni. Gonzalez scored five goals in 24 league appearances with Atletico Madrid in the 2025/26 campaign.
