Decent defensively
Alvarez recorded three tackles (three won), three clearances and one interception in Wednesday's 3-0 win over Czechia. In addition, he was given a yellow card in the 64th minute.
Analysis: Alvarez continues to serve in a holding role for Mexico that is working to perfection, as he played just a bit more up from where he played against Korea after starting in the defense. He would still mainly contribute to the defense, recording an interception, three clearances and three tackles won. He will likely remain in amore defensive role moving forward, so don't expect too much attacking presence from the midfielder.
Makes amazing clearance
Alvarez generated two tackles (two won), six clearances and two interceptions in Thursday's 1-0 win versus South Korea.
Analysis: Alvarez produced a spectacular acrobatic clearance to deny Son Heung-min's first-half effort, leaping to hook the ball away after it had been lobbed over goalkeeper Jose Rangel, though the chance was eventually ruled out for offside regardless. He was deployed at center back after Cesar Montes' suspension following his red card against South Africa, directing play from the back line with composure throughout the match, contibuting two tackles (two won), two interceptions and six clearances. Alvarez's defensive intervention helped preserve Mexico's clean sheet at a crucial stage and his performance underlined his importance to El Tri as they secured top spot in Group A.
