In line for increased role
Alderete started and played 60 minutes in Paraguay's 2-0 win over Bolivia during the international break.
Analysis: Alderete helped Paraguay keep a clean sheet before being withdrawn after an hour. The center-back could be in line for an increased role with Sunderland following the international break after Dan Ballard suffered an injury while representing Northern Ireland. Alderete is expected to partner Kevin Danso in central defense if Ballard remains unavailable.
Available off bench
Alderete is available off the bench for Sunday's match against Manchester City after dealing with an undisclosed injury.
Analysis: Alderete returns to the matchday squad after being forced off in the 52nd minute of Wednesday's Europa League win over AZ Alkmaar with an apparent muscle issue. His place on the bench suggests Sunderland are taking a cautious approach with his return, while Daniel Ballard gets the start against Manchester City. Alderete has primarily operated in a rotational role since Kevin Danso's arrival and could provide defensive cover off the bench if needed Sunday.
