Making progress during break
Elanga (hamstring) is hopeful to take advantage of the extended international break to move closer to a full recovery, but his status remains uncertain ahead of upcoming league fixtures, per Dominic Scurr of Newcastle World.
Analysis: Elanga initially received good news as his muscular injury was not considered a severe issue, and he's still working towards rejoining full training sessions, having missed two league games so far. The attacker will try to reach an optimal fitness level after the break, though the Oct. 12 visit to Coventry might come too soon for him to see action. Meanwhile, Jacob Murphy could continue to fill in on the right wing.
Awaiting MRI results
Elanga (hamstring) is awaiting the results of an MRI to determine the severity of his injury, according to coach Matthias Jaissle. "No real update on Anthony, spoke with him now, he is heading for an MRI scan. We will get more clarity after that and hope it's not too serious. It is sad after the great start he had; he is a key strength in our squad; we want to stay positive"
Analysis: Elanga is already ruled out of Saturday's clash against Hull City and Sweden's upcoming international fixtures, but the exact length of his absence remains uncertain. A previous report suggested the hamstring injury could sideline him for six to eight weeks, though manager Matthias Jaissle indicated Newcastle United is still awaiting MRI results before establishing a firm timeline. Jacob Murphy should be among the primary candidates for increased minutes while Elanga is unavailable.
Could miss six to eight weeks
Elanga has been diagnosed with a hamstring injury and is out for a potential six to eight weeks pending an MRI, according to Craig Hope of the Daily Mail.
Analysis: Elanga was already known to be out until after the international break following a statement from the Swedish FA, but now looks to be set for further time out, facing a potential six to eight week absence. This will depend on an ongoing MRI, with a little room for hope that he misses less time. If this claim becomes true, he could then miss out until November, with Jacob Murphy likely to receive more time due to Elanga's absence. This will take away a pacey and elusive option for Newcastle, likely to affect their attack and definitely their counterattacking ability.
Ruled out for international break
Elanga (undisclosed) has been ruled out of Sweden's upcoming international fixtures after suffering an injury in training prior to Monday's loss to Leeds United, according to the Swedish FA.
Analysis: Elanga was already expected to miss Saturday's clash against Hull City after coach Matthias Jaissle indicated the injury could potentially result in a lengthy absence. His withdrawal from Sweden's squad now confirms he'll remain sidelined through the international break, though Newcastle is still awaiting further MRI results before establishing a firm recovery timeline. Jacob Murphy, Matias Fernandez-Pardo and Bazoumana Toure are among the attacking options who could see increased opportunities during Elanga's absence.
Injury doesn't look good
Elanga's undisclosed injury "doesn't look good," manager Matthias Jaissle said Monday during the post-game presser after the 4-1 loss to Leeds United.
Analysis: Elanga is set for an MRI that will determine the extent of the injury, but Jaissle's words aren't encouraging and could lead the Sweden winger to be sidelined for a considerable amount of time. Given that Elanga isn't expected to be available for Saturday's game against Hull City, and since Jacob Ramsey suffered a thigh injury in warm-ups Monday, names such as Jacob Murphy, Matias Fernandez-Pardo and Bazoumana Toure are in line to see more playing time in the attack in the near future. The loss of Elanga is signficant for the Magpies given his pace, creativity and ability on one-on-ones.
Set for MRI scan
Elanga (undisclosed) is set for an MRI scan to determine how long he'll be sidelined for, according to Lee Ryder of The Chronicle.
Analysis: Elanga won't play Monday against Leeds United, and with manager Matthias Jaissle saying they "need to investigate how long he will be out," an MRI is the next logical step. Fortunately for Newcastle, the international break is a week away, so Elanga may only miss a couple games for them. Jacob Murphy is most likely to benefit on the right wing, though he's rarely been a 90-minute player in his career, meaning more minutes for Bazoumana Toure are also likely.
Out due to undisclosed issue
Elanga is not in the squad for Monday's game against Leeds United due to an undisclosed injury, according to Lee Ryder of The Chronicle. "We need to investigate how long he will be out," manager Matthias Jaissle said in his pre-match presser Monday.
Analysis: Elanga was a surprising omission from Monday's squad, and the Sweden international won't suit up at Elland Road due to an undisclosed injury. With Elanga sidelined, Matias Fernandez-Pardo will get his first start with the Magpies, playing in the front three alongside Jacob Murphy and Yoane Wissa.
Three chances created Saturday
Elanga recorded one cross (zero accurate) and three chances created in Saturday's 2-2 draw against AFC Bournemouth. In addition, he was given a yellow card in the 28th minute.
Analysis: Elanga was largely subdued in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Bournemouth, providing one inaccurate cross across 77 minutes as the Swedish winger struggled to impose himself against a disciplined Cherries back line that doubled up on him throughout. He played a key role in one first-half situation where Adam Smith was forced to clear his dangerous delivery across the face of goal, before being replaced by Jacob Murphy in the 78th minute as manager Jaissle made late changes. Elanga has started all three of Newcastle's opening Premier League fixtures and contributed two goals and four chances created in that span.
Breaks deadlock vs. Spurs
Elanga scored one goal to go with two shots (one on goal), four crosses (one accurate) and three corners in Saturday's 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.
Analysis: Elanga was at the end of a brilliant passing sequence that included Nico Gonzalez and Amar Dedic, and the Swedish forward capped the play with a beautiful finish past Antonin Kinsky. Elanga is enjoying a brilliant start to the season and has scored in Newcastle's first two league matches so far. He should be one of the first names on the team sheet in the Sep. 5 clash against Bournemouth.
Nets opener
Elanga scored one goal to go with two shots (two on goal) and one cross (zero accurate) in Sunday's 2-2 draw against Liverpool.
Analysis: Elanga opened the scoring during Sunday's clash, using his pace on the counter to run through and finish excellently. The winger was a big part of Newcastle's plan to hit Liverpool on the counter and he did brilliantly well. Elanga's pace makes him a pace in any match, and any time he steps on the field.
Assists in 90-minute outing
Elanga provided an assist during Saturday's offseason clash with Bayer Leverkusen.
Analysis: Elanga has completed his rehabilitation from a leg injury and is ready to contend for starts on the right wing in the upcoming Premier League campaign. After recording four World Cup appearances (two starts) and scoring twice for Sweden this summer, he'll aim to remain an interesting offensive contributor for his club. If given significant opportunities, it shouldn't be hard for him to improve on his 2025/26 production of zero goals and one assist across 32 league games (14 starts). Both Elanga and Jacob Murphy should be the main contenders for minutes on the right flank going forward.
Doing fine, spotted in training
Elanga (leg) was spotted in training Tuesday.
Analysis: Elanga suffered a shin injury in a friendly against Valencia earlier this month, but the winger was spotted in training Tuesday and didn't appear to suffer any ill effects from the injury. The Swedish winger should be ready to go for the season opener against Liverpool on Sunday, Aug. 23, and he figures to have a prominent role for a much-changed Newcastle side this season.
Shin injury not considered serious
Elanga suffered a blow to the shin during Saturday's friendly contest against Valencia, after which coach Matthias Jaissle stated that "It was a shocking challenge, that's right. I was in fear, definitely. But now I'm more relaxed because the medical department are almost showing green lights that it's nothing serious. We are blessed. Hopefully he can be back in the next week.", Keith Downie of Sky Sports reports.
Analysis: Elanga was stretchered off the field in the first half of the practice match, and despite initial fears of a significant issue, it now appears he could avoid such complication. However, the forward will likely need to be evaluated, and his involvement in upcoming friendlies may be limited so that the injury heals in time for the Aug. 23 season opener versus Liverpool. He has been operating on the right wing, and it was Jacob Murphy who took that spot after his injury exit Saturday.
Logs 74 minutes in return
Elanga returned from the World Cup with Sweden and played 74 minutes in a preseason friendly against Bristol City, the club announced.
Analysis: Elanga endured a frustrating campaign last season, managing just two goals and an assist across 44 appearances with only 21 starts, well short of the promise he'd shown in previous years. His pace, one-on-one ability and relentless work rate off the ball remain the traits that make him such a dangerous attacking outlet when in form. He rounded out his summer with Sweden at the World Cup, scoring against both the Netherlands and Japan before the team's elimination at the hands of France. Elanga is expected to compete with Harvey Barnes for the right wing role as he continues building up his match fitness through preseason.
WC goal-scoring ends
Elanga logged four inaccurate crosses and one chance created during Sweden's 3-0 loss to France on Tuesday.
Analysis: Unfortunately for Elanga, France defeating Sweden in the World Cup confirms that his WC campaign has finished after a glorious run. After barely playing Sweden's group-stage opener, he logged a consolation goal against the Netherlands. By scoring during the Sweden-Japan game, Elanga not only earned another start but also created a brief streak, which abruptly ended Tuesday. Apart from the goal-scoring, most of Elanga's other value is from cross attempts, but all of his 12 were inaccurate. Ideally for Elanga, whether with Newcastle United or elsewhere, his recent form will carry over, considering he has not recorded a domestic-league goal with the Magpies.
Scored equaliser in 1-1 draw
Elanga scored one goal to go with two shots (two on goal) and three crosses (zero accurate) in Thursday's 1-1 draw against Japan.
Analysis: Elanga scored Sweden's only goal of the game in the 1-1 draw with Japan. This goal confirmed third place in the group, and with four points, they should be enough to ensure qualification to the round of 32. The goal was assisted by Viktor Gyokeres and came across the goal at the perfect height to catch the Japanese keeper off guard. The ball came in looking as if Alexander Isak could head it in and therefore the keeper was unable to commit to the whipped ball which found the far corner.
Scores stunning equalizer
Elanga scored one goal to go with two shots (two on goal) and three crosses (zero accurate) in Thursday's 1-1 draw versus Japan.
Analysis: Elanga came up with a moment of brilliance in the 62nd minute, weaving through the Japanese defense before curling a superb left-footed finish into the left corner to level the match and punch Sweden's ticket to the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams from Group F. He nearly played hero again in stoppage time, but Zion Suzuki came up with a big save after the Newcastle winger burst into the box. Elanga finished the group stage with two goals in three World Cup matches, establishing himself as Sweden's most dangerous attacking threat under coach Graham Potter.
Nets in loss
Elanga scored one goal to go with one shot (one on goal), five crosses (zero accurate) and one corner in Saturday's 5-1 defeat against Netherlands.
Analysis: Elanga scored once off the bench during Saturday's win. The goal is a nice boon, but it was a one-sided defeat that showed few signs of life for Sweden. The winger did well in his limited chances off the bench, but he was limited with a formation that doesn't encourage wing play. Elanga could get a larger role in the group stage finale after this goal.
Subs in late versus Tunisia
Elanga (knee) was inserted very late in Sunday's 5-1 victory over Tunisia, without recording any stat.
Analysis: Elanga was fit following an injury scare in early June, but he was managed carefully in the opener, only playing in the final stages of the game, which was well out of hand at that point. He could compete with Benjamin Nygren and Lucas Bergvall once he's in better shape, while Yasin Ayari started the tournament with a brace. Elanga tallied two goals and one assist in 42 games (20 starts) with Newcastle United in 2025/2026.
Good to go Sunday
Elanga (knee) is available for Sunday's clash with Tunisia, according to manager Graham Potter. "All players are available and ready to play (against Tunisia). I have a pretty clear picture of what the starting eleven will look like and have had it for a while."
Analysis: Elanga picked up a knee contusion at the start of the Swedish training camp, but it appears his recovery has gone as expected. He's back fit and available for the opening clash with Tunisia, where he should be an option in the attack. Elanga will likely be a bench option to start, but he should get his chances off the bench in attacking midfield and as a wide option if needed.
