Taniguchi registered 11 clearances and one interception in Monday's 2-1 defeat to Brazil.
Analysis: Taniguchi stepped into the lineup due to the absence of Ko Itakura, who wasn't 100 percent healthy due to a thigh problem, but he made his presence felt. Taniguchi started in two of his three World Cup appearances but posted impressive numbers defensively. Through his three appearances, he racked up 26 clearances, one interception and two blocked shots.

Taniguchi generated six clearances in Thursday's 1-1 draw against Sweden. In addition, he was given a yellow card in the 77th minute.
Analysis: Taniguchi would come onto the field in the first half for Ko Itakura after he went off for unknown reasons, giving Taniguchi 51 minutes of play. He would see a decent contest after entering the field, as he would notch six clearances, a team high. That said, after starting their opener, he could fight for starting time in the knockouts, especially if Itakura is dealing with an injury after his exit.
