Signs permanently with Augsburg

Gregoritsch completed a permanent transfer to FC Augsburg after the club exercised the buy option in his loan agreement from Brondby IF, signing a contract through 30 June 2027 with a club option for a further year, the club annouced.

Analysis: Gregoritsch arrived at Augsburg in January 2026 on a loan with a purchase option after a difficult spell at Brondby, and he made the move permanent by delivering immediately, scoring six goals and adding three assists in 17 appearances during the second half of last season. That form made him too valuable for Augsburg to let go.

Rendered ineffective versus Spain

Gregoritsch registered two clearances and completed just one pass in Thursday's 3-0 loss against Spain.

Analysis: Gregoritsch tried to use his physicality in the passive phase and had just one opportunity to do some damage on the other end, but he badly botched a header from a pretty good position. He has provided one assist and registered one off-target shot, two chances created and three clearances in three showings (two starts) during the competition.

Assists late equalizer

Gregoritsch assisted once to go with zero corners and two chances created in Saturday's 3-3 draw against Algeria.

Analysis: Gregoritsch came off the bench and played a key role for Austria, as he set up the late-gasp equalizer netted by another sub, Sasa Kalajdzic. Gregoritsch has one start and two appearances in the World Cup but only one shot off target to show for it. With Marko Arnautovic likely to remain as the starting forward, Gregoritsch's upside should be fairly limited across all formats.

Starts on Monday

Gregoritsch recorded one shot (zero on goal) in Monday's 2-0 defeat versus Argentina.

Analysis: Gregoritsch took the place of Sasa Kalajdzic and recorded his first World Cup appearance. Gregoritsch operated as a physical focal point up front and battled effectively against Argentina's defenders, winning five of seven aerial duels. He managed only one shot and was replaced by Carney Chukwuemeka in the 85th minute. Gregoritsch also had the responsibility of initiating the press when Argentina passed backwards to their center backs.

Signs permanently for Augsburg

Gregoritsch has been permanently signed by Augsburg after the club exercised their purchase option following his loan spell from Brondby, signing a contract until June 2027 with an option for a further year, the club announced.

Analysis: Gregoritsch contributed six goals and three assists across 17 Bundesliga appearances since returning to the club in January, taking his overall tally to 35 Bundesliga goals for Augsburg and leaving him just two shy of the club's all-time scoring record held by Alfred Finnbogason. Sporting director Benni Weber praised his leadership, professionalism and importance as a mentor figure for younger players, while Gregoritsch expressed his happiness at having his future resolved before the World Cup, describing his excitement at returning to Augsburg for the new season after the tournament with Austria.

Set for larger role

Gregoritsch has been named in Austria's World Cup squad and steps into a more prominent role following Christoph Baumgartner's tournament-ending thigh injury, with the striker now expected to be a potential starter in Austria's attacking lineup.

Analysis: Gregoritsch spent the first half of the season at Brondby in the Danish Superliga before returning to former club Augsburg on loan in January, contributing six goals and three assists across 17 Bundesliga appearances since his midseason return in what has been a great campaign for him. The striker brings the physical presence, aerial threat and experienced finishing instinct that gives Austria a different attacking profile alongside Marko Arnautovic, and having previously scored 30 goals in 107 appearances for Freiburg, his quality at the top level of German football is well established. Gregoritsch heads into the World Cup knowing that Christoph Baumgartner's (thigh) absence has created a rare opportunity, and the tournament represents his best chance to define his legacy for the national team on the biggest stage of his career.

Scores twice in victory

Gregoritsch scored two goals to go with four shots (three on goal), one cross (zero accurate) and one chance created in Saturday's 3-1 victory versus Monchengladbach.

Analysis: Gregoritsch had one of his top performances of the season in the penultimate game week, capitalizing on a couple of chances inside the opposing box during the 24th and 72nd minutes, respectively. He scored at least one goal or assist for the third time in his last four starts, while the brace was his second in 16 Bundesliga matches played this campaign. Additionally, he has taken more than two shots in three consecutive contests.

Sets up one of three goals

Gregoritsch had an assist while taking three off target shots and creating three chances during Saturday's 3-1 win over Werder Bremen.

Analysis: Gregoritsch set up Anton Kade in the 24th minute assisting the opening goal of the match while leading Augsburg in shots and chances created. The assist was the first since February for the forward as he's combined for two goal involvements and eight shots over his last three appearances.

Clears illness

Gregoritsch (illness) returned to full team training Tuesday and is available for Saturday's clash against Frankfurt, according to Augsburger Allgemeine.

Analysis: Gregoritsch had been ruled out of last weekend's victory over Leverkusen due to illness, but his swift return to the training pitch is exactly the kind of quick turnaround the club had been hoping for. The Austrian striker should regain his starting role against Frankfurt, with Rodrigo Ribeiro stepping back from the front line following his deputy stint in the Leverkusen fixture.
