Concedes three against Argentina

Shobeir recorded four saves and three goals allowed in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to Argentina.

Analysis: Shobeir had a great match against Argentina with his four saves, but was ultimately beaten in the loss. He would hold strong before a string of goals, saving a penalty from Lionel Messi in the 21st minute and not allowing a goal until the 79th minute. He ended the World Cup without a clean sheet in his five starts, notching seven goals allowed and 14 saves.

One save in shootout win

Shobeir had one save and allowed one goal in Friday's 1-1 (5-3) penalty shootout win against Australia.

Analysis: Shobeir didn't stop a single penalty in the shootout and didn't have a lot of work throughout the game. The goalkeeper has been decent so far in the tournament -- out of the four goals the team has conceded, two have been own goals. Shobeir will remain between the posts for the Round of 16 match against Argentina on Tuesday.

Penalty save in draw

Mostafa Shobeir recorded two saves and allowed one goal in Friday's 1-1 draw versus Iran.

Analysis: Shobeir produced two impressive saves and pulled off a penalty stop to deny Mehdi Taremi but aerial crosses proved a problem for him throughout the game and he came close to paying the price, only for an offside flag to spare him late on. He has still been one of Egypt's most reliable performers in the tournament, making nine saves and conceding just three goals despite not recording a clean sheet, and will fancy his chances of adding one in the first knockout game against an Australia side that failed to score in two of their three group stage games.

One goal conceded, four saves

Shobeir logged four saves and one goal conceded during Egypt's 3-1 win Sunday against New Zealand.

Analysis: Maintaining a clean sheet against New Zealand proved more difficult than previously perceived. During the game's 14th minute, midfielder Elijah Just forced a quality save from Shobeir, whose deflection went out for an effective corner. From it, Finn Surman headed in New Zealand's goal, indicating that a clean sheet against the All Whites vanished relatively quickly. Nonetheless, Shobeir subsequently excelled, even if not all his Egyptian teammates followed suit. Near his team's penalty box, Marwan Attia accidentally crossed the ball to Callum McCowatt, whose ensuing shot required a near-post save by Shobeir. McCowatt remained threatening, his 52nd-minute header requiring a high-jump stop from the Egyptian goalkeeper. Though the NZL attack flatlined, it logged one more shot on goal, in which Tyler Bindon missed a tap-in that produced Shobeir's best save Sunday. For the World Cup, between Shobeir's two appearances feature seven saves, 3.5 averaged per game.

Three saves in World Cup debut

Mostafa Shobeir made three saves and allowed one goal in Monday's 1-1 draw against Belgium.

Analysis: Shobeir got the nod as expected and celebrated his World Cup debut between the posts. The goalkeeper had a quiet first half as Egypt's backline kept Belgium's attack at bay, but once Belgium fell behind and poured forward in search of a response, he was put under sustained pressure and responded with three crucial saves alongside assured handling of crosses and punches, proving that his recent friendly displays were no illusion and that coach Hossam Hassan's trust in him was fully earned. The only blemish on his night was an own goal he could do nothing about. New Zealand arrive next in good form after scoring twice against Iran, but Egypt's disciplined defensive display against Belgium gives Shobeir every reason to believe his first World Cup clean sheet could be within reach.

Trending toward starting role

Shobeir could be poised to take over as Egypt's first-choice goalkeeper at the World Cup following his solid performances in recent activity for both club and country.

Analysis: Shobeir arrives at the World Cup having built a strong case for the No. 1 shirt, edging out veteran Mohamed El Shenawy for the starting spot. That status was reinforced at AFCON 2025 where Shobeir's two starts produced two clean sheets, including a standout display against Nigeria in the third-place match where he made four saves and stopped a penalty in the shootout. At 26, he's likely approaching his prime and will hope to make an impact in the top international competition. Egypt's group draw against New Zealand and Iran offers genuine clean sheet potential, and Shobeir should face enough shots in the remaining clash against Belgium to generate a few saves as well.
