Limited to backup role
Ellborg has made one appearance across all competitions this season, playing the full 90 minutes and keeping a clean sheet against Hull City in the Carabao Cup.
Analysis: Ellborg remains the primary backup to Robin Roefs in domestic competition and has shown he can provide reliable cover when called upon. He made 10 saves while conceding just two goals and keeping one clean sheet across three Premier League appearances last season before shutting out Hull City in his only outing this campaign. However, opportunities should remain scarce while Roefs is healthy, and Ellborg's omission from Sunderland's Europa League squad further limits his path to playing time, with usual third-choice goalkeeper Simon Moore selected for the European roster instead. Ellborg should therefore see most of his opportunities in domestic cup competition or if Roefs becomes unavailable.
Concedes one against Magpies
Ellborg registered three saves and allowed one goal in Sunday's 2-1 win over Newcastle United.
Analysis: Ellborg would make three saves Sunday while allowing one goal, a decent match for the keeper. However, it is a second straight league game without a clean sheet, remaining at one in his minimal three league appearances. He continues in the starting role for now as Robin Roefs (hamstring) recovers, although it is up in the air who will start against Tottenham on April 12 when play resumes.
