Hjelde (knee) was part of Sunderland's second-half lineup in Saturday's friendly game versus Liverpool.
Analysis: Hjelde has been working his way back from a small knee problem he suffered during the preseason, but he's expected to be ready to play in the EPL season kickoff in August. However, he wasn't heavily involved throughout the previous campaign, with players like Omar Alderete, Daniel Ballard and Reinildo getting more opportunities in the back line, and he didn't play a lot either during a short loan spell at Sheffield United. Thus, Hjelde will need to work hard to convince the coaching staff to give him more playing time if he stays with the team for the 2026/27 period.

Analysis: Hjelde is ramping up his work in training this week as Sunderland starts their tour in the US, with the defender shown running in training. This will hopefully lead to his inclusion in an upcoming friendly, leaving him fit to start the new season. He spent all of last season on loan, so it is yet to be seen if he will hold a spot in the Premier League, hoping to help his chances by entering the season fit.
