Strong full debut

Gourna-Douath registered one tackle (zero won), one clearance and two interceptions in Saturday's 0-0 draw against Aston Villa. In addition, he was given a yellow card in the 67th minute.

Analysis: Gourna-Douath stepped in for his league full debut against Villa after coming on for Hidemasa Morita at the break in the previous game. He was excellent on the defensive side of the ball with two tackles, two interceptions, a clearance and a block in midfield, and he was tidy enough going the other way to have a hand in two chances for team mates. With Morita out injured and doubt over Matt Crooks, he could get another start against Chelsea.

Adds defensive work off bench

Gourna-Douath generated three tackles (one won) in Saturday's 1-0 win against Coventry City.

Analysis: Gourna-Douath replaced Hidemasa Morita at halftime and provided energy in midfield, attempting three tackles and adding one block across 45 minutes as Coventry began applying more pressure. His athleticism and ball-winning ability give Hull a useful defensive option in central areas. He should remain firmly involved in the midfield rotation and could push for more starts as the season develops.

Joins Hull City

Gourna-Douath signed a five year contract with Hull City through the summer of 2031, joining from Red Bull Salzburg, according to the club.

Analysis: Gourna-Douath made 95 appearances during four years at Salzburg, including 24 in European competition, and helped the club win the Austrian Bundesliga title in his debut season, before loan spells at Roma in 2024/25 and Le Havre last season, where he made 15 appearances. The 23 year old midfielder came through Saint-Etienne's academy, making 65 appearances there, and has represented France at five youth levels, captaining the country at four different age groups, and now begins the next chapter of his career in the Premier League.

Back from suspension

Gourna-Douath has served his one-match suspension and is no longer suspended.

Analysis: Gourna-Douath ends what has been a decent loan spell from Salzburg with 26 tackles, 14 interceptions and 16 clearances across 15 Ligue 1 appearances, having been one of the more consistent performers in Le Havre's midfield engine room since his arrival. Whether the Ciel et Marine will look to extend his stay beyond the current loan agreement remains unclear, with both parties yet to provide any indication of the direction of travel for the promising young midfielder heading into the summer.

Suspended one game

Gourna-Douath is set to be suspended after accumulating five yellow cards in French competitions, the league announced.

Analysis: Gourna-Douath picked up his fifth yellow card in French competitions and is now suspended for the season finale against Lorient on May 17. The Ciel & Marine midfielder has been an undisputed starter in the midfield and his absence guarantees a shake-up in the starting XI, with Simon Ebonog expected to take a larger role against the Merlus.
