Trains fully with team again
Gantenbein (ankle) has rejoined team training Tuesday, having been able to resume sessions with the squad since the end of last week, according to the club.
Analysis: Gantenbein had suffered a right ankle injury during a preseason friendly against Fagiano Okayama, a syndesmosis issue with recovery estimates ranging from several weeks to as much as three months. His return to full training now marks an encouraging step forward following a difficult run of fitness issues that already cost him 13 league games last season due to recurring calf trouble.
Facing weeks on sidelines
Gantenbein will be sidelined for several weeks after suffering a right ankle injury during Saturday's friendly against Fagiano Okayama, according to the club.
Analysis: Gantenbein sustained an ankle injury in a tackle shortly after coming on as a substitute, which has been officially confirmed as a syndesmosis issue, with recovery estimates ranging from several weeks to as much as three months. Even the more optimistic six-week timeline would rule him out of the DFB-Pokal clash with Hallescher FC and the Bundesliga opener at FC Augsburg. This continues a difficult run for the 25-year-old, who already missed 13 league games last season due to recurring calf trouble.
Ankle injury confirmed
Gantenbein has been deemed to only be dealing with an ankle injury and has avoided knee damage, according to manager Miron Muslic, per Nico Lankau of Ruhr 24.
Analysis: Gantenbein had to leave the field in a friendly after being treated on the field and was in worry of a possible knee injury. However, the defender has avoided any knee damage and is only dealing with an injury at the ankle joint, hopefully only a minor injury. With the player having injury issues last campaign, this will be something to monitor, as the club will want to keep depth as they rejoin the Bundesliga and start the season in a month.
Forced off with ankle issue
Gantenbein (ankle) was forced off in the 58th minute of Saturday's 3-1 friendly win over Fagiano Okayama after a sliding tackle, according to Sky Dirk of Sky Sport.
Analysis: Gantenbein had come on for Dejan Ljubicic in the second half but lasted just a few minutes before going down in pain following the challenge and receiving treatment on the pitch. Initial reassurance points to what is likely just an ankle issue, with his knee reported to be fine. Further clarity on the severity of the injury is expected to come from the club as its assessment continues.
