Earns first league start
O'Brien generated 11 clearances in Saturday's 2-0 defeat versus Arsenal.
Analysis: O'Brien made his first Premier League start of the season in the absence of Jarrad Branthwaite, receiving an opportunity in Everton's central defense. The defender was kept particularly busy against Arsenal's attacking unit, producing an impressive 11 clearances as the visitors spent extended periods defending. Despite his individual contribution, Everton conceded twice and were unable to preserve their unbeaten away record. O'Brien could remain an option in central defense if Branthwaite continues to be unavailable, although his prospects for regular starts will depend on the competition for places once the squad returns to full strength.
Providing defensive depth
O'Brien has played just 16 minutes across two Premier League appearances this season, while completing 90 minutes in the Carabao Cup.
Analysis: O'Brien has been limited to a reserve role, with James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite firmly ahead of him in the central defensive hierarchy. He can also provide cover at right-back, though Ainsley Maitland-Niles is preferred in that position, further restricting his path to regular minutes. O'Brien has at least remained match-ready during the international break, playing the full 90 minutes for Ireland against Kosovo.
