Option against Elversberg
Chiarodia (thigh) trained fully this week and is an option for Saturday's clash against Elversberg, according to coach Eugen Polanski.
Analysis: Chiarodia had missed the Bundesliga opener against RB Leipzig after not being fully up to speed following his return to training, but this update now positions him as a possible option for this match. His continued progress will be worth monitoring as Gladbach manages his reintegration.
Won't be ready for opener
Chiarodia (thigh) won't be ready for the Bundesliga opener against RB Leipzig on Saturday, according to manager Eugen Polanski. "[Fabio] Chiarodia and Zento Uno have both trained with the team again this week, although they're not yet fully up to speed."
Analysis: Chiarodia is back in training with the rest of the squad, but he's lacking the fitness to be an option for this contest. The defender could be an option for the Sep. 5 match against Elversberg if he doesn't suffer any setbacks, though.
Set to miss cup opener despite progress
Chiarodia has recovered from a torn muscle fiber and recently completed a full training session with Gladbach, though he remains unavailable for Sunday's German Cup opener at TSV Schott Mainz, according to the Rheinische Post.
Analysis: Chiarodia's recovery continues to trend in the right direction, but the Italian center back is not yet considered ready for a return to matchday squads. His earliest chance to be included is expected to come at the start of the Bundesliga season against RB Leipzig. Chiarodia is expected to continue building up his training load in the coming days as he works toward that target.
Not joining training camp
Chiarodia is still recovering from his torn thigh muscle fiber and will not be joining Gladbach's preseason training camp, according to BMG Edits.
Analysis: Chiarodia's setback came at an inconvenient time, right in the middle of preseason preparations just before the camp, and sporting director Schroder acknowledged the bitter timing while pledging the club's support through his recovery. He is expected to begin an individualized program before eventually being reintegrated into full team training, and further updates on his timeline should come as his rehabilitation progresses.
Sidelined with thigh injury
Chiarodia suffered a torn muscle fiber in his left thigh and will be unavailable for the time being, according to sporting director Rouven Schroder. "This is bitter for Fabio and our Borussia. And the timing, right in the middle of preseason preparations, just before the training camp, is unfavorable. But Fabio will come back, and we will of course support him as best we can during his recovery training"
Analysis: Chiarodia's setback comes at an inconvenient time just as Borussia prepares to head into its preseason training camp, with no specific recovery timeline disclosed at this stage. The defender is expected to begin an individualized recovery program before being reintegrated into full training, and further clarity on his return is expected to come from the club as his rehabilitation progresses.
Signs contract extension until 2028
Chiarodia has signed a one-year contract extension with Gladbach until June 2028, the club announced.
Analysis: Chiarodia made 15 Bundesliga appearances this season after returning from injury, taking his overall tally to 37 Bundesliga outings for the club since joining from Werder Bremen in 2023/24. Chiarodia also made his senior Italy debut this month, starting and playing the full 90 minutes in both the 1-0 victory over Luxembourg and the 1-0 win in Greece, underlining his development into a player operating at the highest level. Sporting director Rouven Schroder described him as a young and developable center-back who has proven his potential both at club and now international level, with the extension reflecting the shared belief that his next important career step will come at Gladbach.
Two interceptions in clean sheet
Chiarodia had one tackle (zero won), three clearances and two interceptions in Saturday's 0-0 draw versus Wolfsburg.
Analysis: With Kevin Diks sidelined for this game, Chardiola stepped in and did his job defensively with three clearances, two interceptions and one tackle, contributing to his second clean sheet in six league starts with the club this season.
