Rafik Messali
TOU
Growing into right-back role
Messali has appeared in all five of Toulouse's Ligue 1 matches, starting the last three as he secured the starting role again under new coach Jens Berthel Askou.
Analysis: Messali has played 247 minutes and recorded seven tackles, seven interceptions and five clearances in five outings with the TeFeCe. After beginning the season with two substitute appearances, he started the next three games and played 72 minutes in the win over Le Havre, securising the starting spot at right-back over newcomer Ismail Diallo.
Returns in loss Saturday
Messali (hamstring) came off the bench in Saturday's 2-0 loss to Lyon.
Analysis: Messali entered the game in the 71st minute shortly after Noah Nartey's goal. Messali has been limited to just 10 starts and 25 appearances over the last two seasons, and while he should add depth to the defensive line, he's not expected to play a big role in Toulouse's defensive line in the near future unless injuries occur.
Suffers new setback
Messali (hamstring) will not travel with Toulouse for Friday's friendly against Real Sociedad in Tarbes after landing in the treatment room this week, according to Les Violets.
Analysis: Messali had only recently confirmed he was fully recovered from the ankle and hamstring issues that sidelined him for three months down the stretch last season, so this new absence is a discouraging development so soon after that clean bill of health. His status will need to be reassessed in the coming days as Toulouse continues preseason preparations under new coach Jens Berthel Askou.
Back in mix during preseason
Messali is training in full during preseason with Toulouse, confirming he has recovered from the injuries he sustained last season, the club posted.
Analysis: Messali's clean bill of health is a positive sign after ankle and hamstring issues sidelined him for three months down the stretch last season. With a full preseason under his belt, he will look well positioned to regain a regular role heading into the 2026/27 Ligue 1 campaign under new coach Jens Berthel Askou.
