Out of XI for first time
Hemmings was dropped to the bench for the first time this season as Johan Manzambi was inserted into the starting XI against Tottenham.
Analysis: Hemmings had started every game for Villa this season but dropped to the bench at Tottenham, where Johan Manzambi made his full debut after being eased back from injury through substitute appearances. Manzambi answered with a goal and an assist in Villa's first league win of the season, while Hemmings came on for a late cameo. Seven starts across all competitions have brought him just one assist, and with Manzambi now in possession of the shirt, he could be looking at limited opportunities from here on.
One chance created in quiet half
Hemmings generated one clearance in Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest.
Analysis: Hemmings played 45 minutes on Villa's left attacking midfield before being replaced at halftime, registering one clearance, one chance created but no shots in a quiet first-half display. He was unable to contribute to Villa's attacking structure despite the home side dominating possession in the opening period. Hemmings has featured in all of Villa's four Premier League fixtures this season, contributing one shot and three chances created in that span.
Creates big chance in liveliest display
Hemmings had one shot (one on goal), one cross (zero accurate) and one chance created in Saturday's 0-0 draw against Hull City.
Analysis: Hemmings was the source of the best chance of the game when he carried the ball forward and picked out Emiliano Buendia, who could not keep his effort down. The winger had also drawn a save from Konstantinos Tzolakis early on, which made this his liveliest performance yet after just one chance created in his previous starts. He has held the left flank ahead of Alejandro Garnacho so far, but the signing of Ibrahim Mbaye, who watched this one from the bench, may eat into his minutes unless Unai Emery moves John McGinn into midfield instead.
Gets nod in opener
Hemmings generated three tackles (two won) in Sunday's 4-0 loss against Brighton.
Analysis: Hemmings was largely limited to defensive work in the season opener as his side struggled to gain control of the match. The winger showed good work rate and pressing intensity but had few opportunities to display his pace and direct running in the final third. After making just two Premier League appearances last season, Hemmings' start Sunday is an encouraging indication that he could take on a larger role during the 2026-27 campaign.
Active role during preseason
Hemmings went the full 90 in the UEFA Super Cup against PSG on Aug. 12 and looks primed to have a bigger role in the first team during the 2026/27 season.
Analysis: Aston Villa lost Morgan Rogers in the summer, as the star playmaker signed with Chelsea, but Hemmings could be ready to take his place in the lineup. He lined up on the left side of the attack and went the full 90 against PSG in the UEFA Super Cup, and he played on the right in a 4-4-2 system in a loss to Bayern Munich in another friendly Aug. 7. Hemmings looks set to have a role in the first team in 2026/27, and it wouldn't be shocking if he starts in the EPL opener against Brighton on Sunday.
