Returns to bench against Hull

Schuster (ankle) has been named among Brentford's substitutes for Sunday's Premier League clash against Hull City after recovering from an ankle injury and illness.

Analysis: Schuster returns to Brentford's matchday squad after missing the previous encounter against Liverpool due to an ankle issue and illness. The center-back had previously started three consecutive Premier League matches while covering for Nathan Collins (calf), but his ankle problem forced him off at halftime against Aston Villa. Despite recovering sufficiently to be available again, Schuster will begin Sunday's match on the bench, with Sepp van den Berg and Kristoffer Ajer selected to start in central defense. He could see limited playing time as he works toward regaining full match fitness.

Available to face Hull City

Schuster (ankle) is available for Sunday's Premier League clash against Hull City after recovering from a knock and illness, according to coach Keith Andrews. "But he's been back training the last few days, so he's back to himself, more or less."

Analysis: Schuster is back in contention after missing Saturday's clash against Liverpool due to an ankle issue and illness. The center-back had previously aggravated his ankle against Aston Villa, forcing him off at halftime and interrupting a run of three consecutive Premier League starts while covering for Nathan Collins (calf). Although he is now available for selection, Sepp van den Berg and Kristoffer Ajer are expected to form Brentford's central defensive partnership against Hull City on Sunday, potentially leaving Schuster with a place on the bench.

Remains out Saturday

Schuster (ankle) is not in the squad for Saturday's match against Liverpool.

Analysis: Schuster is not ready to return after aggravating an ankle issue that forced him off at halftime against Aston Villa. The center-back resumed on-field training during the week but still needs more time before returning to action. His absence interrupts a run of three consecutive Premier League starts while covering for Nathan Collins (calf). Aaron Hickey could again provide cover centrally, while Sepp van den Berg's return offers another defensive alternative.

Uncertain despite training return

Schuster (ankle) has resumed on-field training but remains uncertain for Saturday's Premier League clash against Liverpool, according to coach Keith Andrews. "Jannik and Kev have been on the grass this week and we'll see what tomorrow brings in terms of how much they can do."

Analysis: Schuster was withdrawn at halftime against Aston Villa after aggravating an ankle issue he had carried into the match. The center-back has started Brentford's last three Premier League fixtures while covering for the injured Nathan Collins, although his own fitness is now in question. Aaron Hickey could again provide cover centrally if Schuster is unavailable, while Sepp van den Berg's return to the matchday squad offers another defensive alternative.

Withdrawn at half-time

Schuster (ankle) was replaced at half-time of Saturday's 2-2 draw at Aston Villa after carrying an ankle knock into the match, according to head coach Keith Andrews. "Jannik picked up a knock during the week. There was just a little incident with his ankle, so I thought it was the right decision just to take him out of the firing line,"

Analysis: Schuster picked up an ankle knock in training during the week and was not moving freely in Friday's session or the pre-match warm-up, which led coach Keith Andrews to take him off at the interval. Aaron Hickey moved into central defence for the second half, an unfamiliar role for the full-back. Schuster has started the last three games for Brentford.

Assist and clean sheet Friday

Schuster assisted once to go with zero corners and one chance created in Friday's 3-0 victory against Chelsea.

Analysis: Schuster made his second straight start Friday and put together an excellent performance. He assisted Jaidon Anthony's opener in the 61st minute with a headed pass, his first goal contribution with his new club. He also kept a clean sheet against the strong Chelsea attack, contributing 12 clearances, three blocked shots and one tackle in his productive 90 minutes of action.

Records nine clearances

Schuster registered one shot (zero on goal) in Saturday's 1-1 draw versus Sunderland.

Analysis: Schuster was called upon unexpectedly after being unused in Brentford's opening two league fixtures but responded with nine clearances across 73 minutes, the highest total among Brentford's defenders Saturday. That production showed he can handle a substantial defensive workload despite entering with limited match action. If Nathan Collins is forced to miss time, Schuster's performance gives Brentford a viable option to take on increased minutes at center-back.

Signs for Brentford

Schuster has joined Brentford from Red Bull Salzburg on a contract until June 2031 with an option of a further year, subject to international clearance, his new club announced.

Analysis: Schuster made 29 appearances across all competitions for Salzburg this season including three in the Europa League, with a notable start against Premier League side Aston Villa among his highlights. Schuster began his professional career with Salzburg's feeder club Liefering before breaking into the senior squad, and was part of the Salzburg squad that featured at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. Coach Keith Andrews expressed his delight at completing the signing, praising the teenager's determination and potential while noting his experience at a high level despite his young age. An Austria Under-21 international who has represented his country from Under-16 level upward, Schuster is expected to develop further under coach Andrews in west London after signing what is a long-term commitment to the Bees.
