Signs with Rangers
Makhanya signed a four year deal with Rangers, with an option for an additional year, after departing Philadelphia Union, the club announced.
Analysis: Makhanya began his career at Stellenbosch in South Africa before moving to the United States in 2023, making his senior debut for Philadelphia Union in February 2025 and going on to establish himself as a first team regular with 49 appearances across all competitions. The center back also made his senior debut for South Africa in May 2026 and was subsequently called up to the World Cup squad. Makhanya is expected to add depth to Rangers' backline as he begins the next chapter of his career in Scotland.
Back from suspension
Makhanya has served his suspension and will return to face New York Red Bulls on July 22 following the World Cup break.
Analysis: Makhanya had been forced to sit out after accumulating five yellow cards, missing the Inter Miami fixture in the process. The center-back had been on a run of 11 consecutive starts prior to the ban, contributing 46 clearances, 23 tackles and 14 interceptions across that span, and is expected to slot straight back into the defensive lineup against the Red Bulls once MLS action resumes after the tournament.
Serving another suspension
Makhanya is set to serve a one match suspension and will miss the clash with Inter Miami on Saturday.
Analysis: Makhanya will serve his second suspension of the season, this time for yellow card accumulation. He's recorded 11 straight starts in a row, collecting 46 clearances with 23 tackles and 14 interceptions in that span. Due to this suspension, he will not play until after the World Cup break.
