Earns Spain U21 call-up
Canales has been called up by Spain U21s for their final European Championship qualifier against Romania, according to the club.
Analysis: Canales earns the call-up after recently returning from a calf injury that interrupted his start to the season. The midfielder has made four La Liga appearances, including two starts, recording four shots, five chances created and five crosses without a goal contribution. Canales began the campaign in the starting XI but now faces competition from Benat Gerenabarrena and Mikel Jauregizar for regular minutes in midfield.
Makes squad for derby
Canales (calf) is in the squad for Saturday's derby against Alaves, according to the club.
Analysis: Canales had been a late call after previously being left out against Levante while recovering from his left soleus injury, with Benat Gerenabarrena and Ruiz de Galarreta having remained the main options in central midfield during his absence. His inclusion now confirms his recovery is complete, positioning him to compete for a return to Athletic's midfield.
