Three shots from defense
O'Nien generated three shots (zero on goal), two crosses (zero accurate) and one chance created in Sunday's 0-0 draw versus Leeds United.
Analysis: O'Nien was in the defense Sunday as he typically is, but still managed some work in the attack, notching three shots, although none were on target. He would also add an interception and 14 clearances in the defense as Sunderland earned a clean sheet.
Depth option in deep defense
O'Nien has made one appearance for Sunderland in the Premier League this season, totaling 67 minutes in the opener before remaining a bench option only in the last four games.
Analysis: O'Nien remains buried on the depth chart behind Dan Ballard, Trai Hume, Nordi Mukiele, Omar Alderete and summer signing Kevin Danso, limiting him to fringe minutes despite his standing as a senior figure in the squad. He has yet to register an interception or won tackle this season. Barring a rash of injuries across the back line, he projects as a squad piece rather than a regular starter.
