Cleared to play with protective mask

Mechele (nose) is available for Wednesday's Champions League clash against Lens despite suffering a nasal fracture, with coach Ivan Leko confirming that the defender can play wearing a protective mask without any issues. "He can play with a mask, no issues, I follow what the medical staff says."

Analysis: Mechele appears set to retain his starting role in Club Brugge's defense despite suffering a broken nose during the recent Champions League encounter against Inter Milan. The experienced center-back participated in Tuesday's final training session wearing a protective mask, with coach Leko indicating that the injury should not prevent him from featuring against Lens. Mechele was an unused substitute during the Belgian Cup victory over Lokeren, but his return to full training suggests he is ready to resume competitive action. The defender has started both of Club Brugge's Champions League matches this season, playing the full 90 minutes against Aston Villa and Inter Milan while recording nine clearances, two interceptions and three blocks. With Joel Ordonez (foot) still unavailable, Mechele's presence would provide valuable stability to the back line, and he should remain a strong candidate to start Wednesday's European fixture.

Eight clearances despite exit

Mechele generated two tackles (zero won), eight clearances and two interceptions in Friday's 2-1 defeat versus Spain.

Analysis: Mechele was decent in the defense despite two goals allowed and an end to Belgium's World Cup campaign, recording two tackles, two intercpetions and eight clearances. That said, the defender didn't leave the field once for Belgium this World Cup, notching four interceptions, seven tackles and 40 clearances in the defense. However, he would only earn one clean sheet, as Belgium did have a rough tournament outside of the win over the USA.
