Signs new long-term Liverpool deal
Szoboszlai has signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool, extending his stay at Anfield ahead of the 2026-27 season, the club announced.
Analysis: Szoboszlai posted the best individual numbers of his Liverpool career in 2025-26, finishing with 13 goals and 12 assists from 53 appearances and taking home the club's Player of the Season award, a reflection of him carrying the team through a difficult campaign more than anyone else in the squad. He had already tasted success in his first two seasons at Anfield, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023-24 and the Premier League in 2024-25. What sets Szoboszlai apart is his positional flexibility, having deputized at right back through injury crises while also featuring as a No. 10, box to box midfielder and winger over the course of his time at the club. Beyond his versatility, Szoboszlai has developed into one of Liverpool's most dangerous shooters from distance and a genuine set piece threat. That combination of adaptability and end product made him a key figure the club prioritized tying down long term as it moves into a new managerial era under Andoni Iraola.
Present for start of preseason
Szoboszlai was present and in high spirits at the start of Liverpool's preseason, returning to training ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, the club posted.
Analysis: Szoboszlai operated as the driving force in Liverpool's midfield last season, combining relentless pressing intensity with the technical quality and late box arrivals that made him one of the most complete box to box midfielders in the Premier League. Under new coach Andoni Iraola, his exact role remains to be seen, though his profile suggests he should continue to feature centrally in midfield. Having established himself as an indispensable starter for Liverpool, he will be expected to build on that foundation under the new coaching setup in 2026-27.
Pair of assists
Szoboszlai assisted twice to go with one shot (one on goal), 12 crosses (five accurate) and six corners in Friday's 4-2 defeat against Aston Villa.
Analysis: Szoboszlai provided a pair of assists during Friday's defeat, setting up Virgil van Dijk for two goals. Szoboszlai continues to be one of the only bright spots in a horrendous Liverpool campaign, but it wasn't enough to salvage a result Friday. Szoboszlai will look to add to his goal contributions during the final match of the campaign.
Goal, assist in loss
Szoboszlai scored one goal and assisted once from two shots and four chances created in Sunday's 3-2 loss against Manchester United.
Analysis: Szoboszlai continues to be one of the few bright spots for a dreadful Liverpool side, as he tallied a pair of goal contributions during a clash with their arch-rivals Manchester United. The midfielder was brilliant throughout and by far the best player on the pitch even in the defeat. He will continue to thrive individually while the club as a whole seems to struggle.
Assists for winner
Szoboszlai assisted once to go with two shots (zero on goal), five crosses (one accurate) and four corners in Sunday's 2-1 win over Everton.
Analysis: Szoboszlai sent in the cross that found Virgil van Dijk perfectly and sent the traveling Kop into rapture. The midfielder has been the hero of Liverpool this season and continues to step up in the biggest moments. Szoboszlai will remain a major contributor in the closing stages of the campaign, with a large role in open play and set-pieces.
Whips in four crosses
Szoboszlai recorded one shot, two chances created and four crosses in Saturday's 4-0 loss to Liverpool.
Analysis: Szoboszlai had a decent outing with his four crosses but was unable to do much for his team, resulting in the brutal loss. It is now two straight games without a goal contribution for the midfielder, just after seeing a stretch of two goals in two games, remaining at five goals and three assists in league play this season.
Nets from corner routine
Szoboszlai scored one goal to go with six shots (two on goal), three crosses (two accurate) and two corners in Wednesday's 4-0 victory against Galatasaray.
Analysis: Szoboszlai scored from a beautiful corner routine that laid the ball off to him right at the penalty spot. He made no mistake slotting home with his left foot and bringing the tie parity. Szoboszlai continues to be one of the most consistent pieces of the Liverpool XI, and has established himself as a truly crucial option in the midfield.
Scores early
Szoboszlai scored one goal to go with three shots (one on goal), nine crosses (two accurate) and one corner in Sunday's 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur.
Analysis: Szoboszlai scored an early goal during Sunday's draw, continuing as one of the lone bright spots in a disappointing Liverpool campaign. The midfielder has played all over the pitch and been excellent wherever he lines up. He was left with another disappointment as Tottenham scored late to leave him with a draw. Szoboszlai will be key as Liverpool look to turn around their one-goal deficit in the Champions League.
Frustrated Tuesday
Szoboszlai registered three shots (one on goal), six crosses (one accurate) and four corners in Tuesday's 1-0 defeat versus Galatasaray. In addition, he was given a yellow card in the 95th minute.
Analysis: Szoboszlai only put a single shot on goal during Tuesday's clash, and failed to get much done throughout the match. The midfielder had a solid role on set-pieces as usual, but just couldn't do much with that role. Szoboszlai has been crucial to Liverpool's attack this season and will be called upon in the second leg to try and pull off a comeback.
Assists in win
Szoboszlai assisted once to go with four crosses (one accurate) and four corners in Saturday's 5-2 win over West Ham United. In addition, he was given a yellow card in the 85th minute.
Analysis: Szoboszlai provided one assist during Saturday's rout, a well-deserved goal contribution after a brilliant match. The attacking midfielder has been a bright spot throughout the campaign, with Szoboszlai consistently keeping the attack going. He will hope he can build from that in the closing stages of the Champions League.
Suspension over
Szoboszlai is no longer suspended and is an option for Saturday's match against Brighton.
Analysis: Szoboszlai is back as an option for his club following a controversial sending off in his last match, missing out against Sunderland on Wednesday. He will now have his eyes set on returning to the starting XI immediately, especially after a wonderful goal last time out. He has been starting at right-back recently, likely to earn the same spot with Conor Bradley (knee) out.
Sent off after magical free kick
Szoboszlai scored one goal before he was shown a red card in injury time of Sunday's 2-1 loss to Manchester City.
Analysis: Szoboszlai would appear to be the hero of Sunday's match for a few minutes after a wonder of a free kick that kissed the post gave Liverpool a 1-0 lead. However, that would quickly slide from their grasp after two City goals, with the frustration appearing to get to Szoboszlai after he denied a clear goal scoring opportunity with the pull of a shirt and was sent off in extra time. He will now miss one game, returning to face Brighton on Feb. 14, missing one of their two games this week. Without the midfielder who now has five goals and two assists, the club will likely hope for the return of Joe Gomez (hip), or Curtis Jones may have to start out of position at right-back, starting their once this season.
Assists in rout
Szoboszlai assisted once to go with three shots (one on goal), five crosses (one accurate) and six corners in Wednesday's 6-0 win against Qarabag.
Analysis: Szoboszlai got in on the goals during Wednesday's clash, adding an assist as the game turned into a total rout. The midfielder was largely excellent throughout the match and also maintained a stable floor with a role on corners. He should continue to play a huge role as one of the most consistent Liverpool attacking options.
Scores and assists on Saturday
Szoboszlai scored one goal and assisted once from one shot and three chances created in Saturday's 3-2 loss against AFC Bournemouth.
Analysis: Szoboszlai took the corner which was turned in by Virgil van Dijk in the 45th minute and then equalized with a brilliant free kick in the 80th minute set up by Mohamed Salah. Szoboszlai also had to put in a shift at the right back position after the substitution of Jeremie Frimpong. Szoboszlai has arguably been Liverpool's best player this campaign and now has four goal contributions in the last four games across all competitions.
Scores smart freekick
Szoboszlai scored one goal to go with one shot (one on goal), three crosses (zero accurate) and two corners in Wednesday's 3-0 win against Marseille.
Analysis: Szoboszlai opened the scoring in stoppage time of the first half with a smart free kick that slipped under Marseille's jumping wall. That moment changed the match's texture, forcing Marseille to chase the game and creating more transition space for Liverpool after the break. He also helped Liverpool maintain structure in midfield as the tempo rose late. Szoboszlai contributed three crosses, two corners, and three clearances to close out a shift that was globally calm, as Marseille couldn't impose their game due to the Reds' control.
Takes five shots in draw
Szoboszlai took five shots off target and added two interceptions in Thursday's 0-0 draw against Arsenal.
Analysis: The talented playmaker has gone five straight EPL matches without scoring or assisting. However, he's posted decent peripheral numbers in that stretch while moving all over the final third. Szoboszlai has racked up nine shots, seven chances created, 28 crosses, 15 corners, five clearances, four interceptions, two tackles and two clean sheets over that stretch.
Suspension over
Szoboszlai is no longer banned and is an option for the club in upcoming games.
Analysis: Szoboszlai has cleared his ban after a fifth yellow card this season, serving his ban against Wolves. The midfielder should immediately return to the starting XI, a regular on the right side of the field for the club when fit, notching three goal contributions in 17 appearances this season.
Picks up fifth yellow card
Szoboszlai was shown his fifth yellow card of the season Saturday and will be suspended for one game.
Analysis: Szoboszlai is heading to the sidelines for a game due to yellow card accumulation, set to miss out against Wolves on Saturday. Unfortunately, this is a major loss for the club, as they are already fearing an injury to Conor Bradley (undisclosed) at right-back, and Szoboszlai has been his common replacement lately. Jeremie Frimpong will likely be called into that spot against Wolves, with Szoboszlai returning to face Leeds United on Jan. 1.
Starts Saturday
Szoboszlai (ankle) is in the starting XI for Saturday's match against Tottenham.
Analysis: Szoboszlai has passed his testing Saturday and come through on the right side of his injury, with the midfielder an option from the starting XI immediately. He should remain in an attacking role moving forward now that Conor Bradley is an option, looking to add to his six-goal contributions this campaign.
Late call against Spurs
Szoboszlai (ankle) will be a late call for Saturday's clash against Tottenham, coach Arne Slot said in the press conference. "Dominik trained yesterday, parts of the training [session], for the first time so let's see where he is today and how he is tomorrow. That completely depends on how he does today. So if can fulfil the whole training session and then you speak to the player and the medical staff. If the player feels comfortable to play and he did all the things he had to do, then he will start. If he can fulfil the whole session or he fulfils it but he doesn't feel comfortable himself we will have a discussion. But Dom has been a starter for me in the one-and-a-half years I am here now and for the performances he's brought in, he would be a starter tomorrow if he is completely fit."
Analysis: Szoboszlai completed parts of the training session on Thursday and is expected to train with the team again on Friday. The midfielder will be a late fitness call after the final training session and, if he is deemed fit to face the Spurs, he will likely return directly to the starting XI, according to manager Arne Slot. If he ultimately misses the game, this would likely confirm that Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, and Alexander Isak will all start in the frontline for the Reds.
