Retires after sixth World Cup
Ochoa announced his retirement at age 41, the goalkeeper said in a social media post.
Analysis: Ochoa closes out a career spanning nine clubs and seven countries, most recently at Cyprus' AEL Limassol, with 154 caps for Mexico. He shares the record for most World Cup appearances at six tournaments alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, having come on as a late substitute in Mexico's final group match against the Czech Republic this summer for what proved to be his farewell. The goalkeeper became a household name at the 2014 World Cup with a standout performance against host Brazil, and added to his legend in 2018 with a clean sheet in Mexico's win over Germany. Ochoa's decorated career also includes a stint in Ligue 1 with Ajaccio and, in 2007, becoming the first and only Mexican to be nominated for the Ballon d'Or.

Analysis: Ochoa is reportedly nearing retirement following an underwhelming season with AEL Limassol in Cyprus, where he saved 58 percent of the shots on target he faced. The 40-year-old goalkeeper last featured for the national team in November 2024 and has since occupied a backup role behind Jose Rangel. Even so, the veteran will likely push to make at least one group-stage start at the World Cup as he looks to put the finishing touch on a solid international career, and he could see additional action if he shows convincing form in training.
