Records assist, misses penalty

Summerville assisted once to go with three crosses (one accurate) and three corners in Monday's 1-1 (4-3) penalty shootout loss against Morocco.

Analysis: Summerville had a bright spot in Monday's game as the Netherlands earned the first goal of the match, getting on the end of a run before finding Cody Gakpo for an assist in the 72nd minute. However, much of this would be wiped out in the penalty shootout, as Summerville would have his penalty saved in a poor effort to give Morocco the green light to score and win the match. He ends the tournament with a decent run of play, earning a goal contribution in all but one game with two goals on two shots and two assists on four chances created.

Scores and assists off bench

Summerville scored one goal and assisted once from one shot and one chance created in Saturday's 5-1 win over Sweden.

Analysis: Summerville came on at halftime to replace Donyell Malen and immediately transformed the Netherlands' right flank, assisting Cody Gakpo's second goal within minutes of coming on with a sharp combination inside the area, then finishing coolly in the closing stages after Memphis Depay's assist to make it 5-1 and complete a remarkable individual performance across just 45 minutes. The West Ham winger also registered one shot on target and created one chance in a cameo that will make it extremely difficult for coach Ronald Koeman to leave him out of the starting lineup for the knockout rounds. His directness, finishing quality and ability to create in tight spaces give the Netherlands one of the most dangerous wide threats remaining in the World Cup, and the debate around whether he starts the round of 32 ahead of Malen now appears to have only one realistic answer.
