Yeray Álvarez
Suffers concussion Saturday
Alvarez exited Saturday's game against Atletico Madrid after sustaining a concussion.
Analysis: Alvarez couldn't continue after the first half following a collision with Morten Hjulmand and was substituted during the break, with Aitor Paredes taking his place. The latter should be in line for more minutes if Alvarez is forced to miss time going forward, though further tests will be needed to determine whether that'll be the case.
Notches assist
Alvarez assisted once to go with two shots (zero on goal), three crosses (zero accurate) and two chances created in Saturday's 3-1 defeat to Sevilla.
Analysis: Alvarez was unable to score Saturday but still helped his team to a goal, finding Aitor Paredes in the 70th minute for a consolation goal. This comes as a rare center-back to center-back goal and a very rare assist for Alvarez, being his first since 2022. He would also add eight clearances in the rough defeat.
Signs contract extension until 2028
Alvarez signed a contract extension with Athletic Club until June 2028 with an option for a further season, according to the club.
Analysis: Alvarez made his debut under coach Ernesto Valverde in 2014/15 and has gone on to make 259 appearances for the club across a decade in the first team, winning two trophies in that time including the Supercopa in 2019/20 and the Copa del Rey in 2023/24. Director of Football Mikel Gonzalez praised Alvarez as a winning center-back with great concentration and a winning mentality, also highlighting his remarkable strength in overcoming adversities throughout his career. The Barakaldo-born defender joined Lezama's academy from Danok Bat as a youngster and has since become one of the most important and consistent figures in Athletic Club's defensive setup under coach Valverde, who has overseen seven of his 10 senior seasons at the club.
Busy outing in win
Alvarez had seven clearances and two interceptions in Tuesday's 1-0 win over Osasuna.
Analysis: Alvarez didn't do much outside of delivering solid fantasy value as a defender in this match due to a high number of clearances. Realistically, the majority of his upside comes from defensive stats. He's made just two appearances this season following a ban due to doping allegations, and in those two outings, he's racked up 13 clearances, one tackle and two interceptions.
