Back in squad
Fofana (lower body) is on the bench for Saturday's game against Philadelphia Union.
Analysis: Fofana returns to the group after a lower-body problem ruled him out for the first three weeks of October. The central man has scored and assisted once this season and is averaging 6.4 clearances and 1.9 tackles per game in league play. A spot on the bench points to a gradual return, and Ethan Kohler, who has often filled in at center-back, will keep the job for now.
Out with lower body problem
Fofana won't play Saturday against Seattle Sounders after picking up a lower body injury, the MLS reported Friday.
Analysis: Fofana has been a defensive contributor for New England, and his lower body absence adds to a Revolution availability picture that has been tested across multiple positions this season. This situation will put an end to his run of all minutes played in the last 26 league games, a period in which he tallied 167 clearances, 50 tackles and 35 interceptions, as well as one goal and an assist. Ethan Kohler, who has often been deployed at center-back, could move from midfield to defense to fill the void, with midfielder Brooklyn Raines looking to complete the starting lineup.
Assists in Sunday's win
Fofana assisted once to go with one shot (zero on goal) and two chances created in Sunday's 3-1 win against Columbus Crew.
Analysis: Fofana recorded his first assist of the season Sunday as his headed pass in the 32nd minute set up Matt Polster's strike which tied the match at 1-1. It was one of two chances he created, matching his season high. He played very well on the defensive end too, recording five clearances, three tackles, two interceptions and one blocked shot in his full 90 minutes of action.
Seven clearances during start
Fofana logged seven clearances and one interception during New England's 3-0 win Wednesday at D.C. United.
Analysis: Even though New England seemingly logged a comfortable win, the Revolution required excellent defense, which his team-best seven clearances indicate they provided. Concerning defender usage, he is their most reliable, having logged 19 consecutive starts since February. For them, Fofan logged 131 clearances, 6.9 averaged per appearance.
