Stuck deep in midfield mix
Hughes has been limited to two substitute appearances this season in the Premier League, holding a rotational role under new coach Pierre Sage.
Analysis: Hughes came on for the final 13 minutes of the September 12 loss to Ipswich Town, one of his two involvements across Palace's first five league matches of 2026/27. He was left out of the matchday squad entirely for the scoreless draw at Leeds United on September 20. New manager Pierre Sage has options in the middle of the park with Adam Wharton, Daichi Kamada, Quinten Timber, Jefferson Lerma and Cheick Doucoure, leaving Hughes seventh on the club's own midfield depth chart. At 31 years old, he profiles purely as rotation and injury cover, and his minutes should stay sparse barring a run of absences ahead of him.
Illness cleared for Thursday
Hughes (illness) is back available for Thursday's Conference League second leg against Shakhtar Donetsk after recovering from his illness, according to coach Oliver Glasner. "The good news is that Hughes is back"
Analysis: Hughes missed Sunday's defeat due to the illness, though his absence had a limited impact given that he had gone unused in the previous fixture as well. His return gives manager Oliver Glasner an additional option heading into a crucial European second leg, with Crystal Palace looking to advance in the Conference League.
