Gives up own goal
Gross had an own goal, five crosses (two accurate) and one corner in Sunday's 2-0 loss versus Liverpool.
Analysis: Gross spent too much time playing with German teammate Florian Wirtz Sunday as it seemed instinct took over when he set up his compatriot for the opening goal. Originally it was given as Wirtz's goal, but Gross got dinged with the own goal in the end. Whether it was given as an own goal or not, Gross was clearly at fault and it was a deeply disappointing start for the midfielder, who never really got back into the match.
Busy from set pieces Sunday
Gross had two shots (zero on goal), 11 crosses (three accurate) and three corners in Sunday's 5-0 win over Crystal Palace. In addition, he was given a yellow card in the 29th minute.
Analysis: Gross came very close to earning a direct contribution when his fourth-minute cross was deflected by an opposing player for the opener, and then he played a dangerous pass in the build-up to the hosts' fourth goal during the win. He also set a season-high mark of 11 crosses in seven EPL appearances so far. His passing numbers have dipped lately, but his steady set-piece volume remains a consistent source of attacking potential, and his seven combined goals and assists still lead the team.
