Joins Earthquakes as free agent
Gunn has signed with San Jose as a free agent through the 2029-30 MLS season, the club announced.
Analysis: Gunn joins San Jose fresh off starting all three of Scotland's group stage matches at this summer's World Cup, where he kept a clean sheet as the team narrowly missed out on advancing to the knockout stage. He arrives as a free agent after a season with Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, which followed four seasons as first choice goalkeeper at Norwich City, where he made 114 league appearances and helped the club reach the Championship playoff semifinals in 2023-24. He previously spent three seasons at Southampton, including a loan at Stoke City, after beginning his career at Manchester City.

Gunn recorded five saves and allowed three goals in Wednesday's 3-0 defeat to Brazil.
Analysis: Gunn ended the group stage with five strong saves and, despite conceding three goals, had a strong game. He and his side will now need to wait on other results to see if they can progress as a best third-placed team. In the opening goal, Gunn was dribbled around by Vinicius Jr after a Scott McKenna mistake, and in the second goal, Gunn was beaten by a precise cross that found Vinicius Jr at the back post.
Concedes once vs Morocco
Gunn had one save and allowed one goal in Friday's 1-0 defeat to Morocco.
Analysis: Gunn's second World Cup start got off to a rough start as Ismael Saibari found himself free in the box and sent a hard strike right over Gunn's shoulder just 90 seconds into the match. The Scottish defense locked in throughout the rest of the match, only needing one more Gunn save to keep Morocco from doubling its lead. Overall it was a fairly strong performance from Gunn considering the tough opponent, but his team's attack couldn't break through the Moroccan defense to find an equalizer. That puts all the pressure on the final group match versus Brazil on Wednesday, a side which has scored four goals through two matches in this World Cup.
Starts WC with clean sheet win
Gunn recorded two saves and secured a clean sheet in Saturday's 1-0 win over Haiti.
Analysis: Gunn made two saves as he helped Scotland to a 1-0 win in their World Cup opener against Haiti. The keeper had also started all three games at the Euros in 2024, but conceded seven in the three games that Scotland struggled in. The two saves that were required came relatively simple for Gunn in the centre of the goal, but with 15 shots against them, Scotland were fortunate not to come up against higher quality shots on goal. One second-half header in particular glanced just wide of the post and would have been difficult to save if it ended up on target.
Leaves Nottingham as free agent
Gunn will leave Nottingham Forest as a free agent following the expiration of his contract on June 30, the club announced.
Analysis: Gunn joined Forest in August 2025 and made one first-team appearance, coming on as a half-time substitute in the 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace in February. The Scottish goalkeeper departs having been named as the number one for Scotland's World Cup squad, with his international duties taking precedence as his club contract comes to an end.
Should start for Scotland
Gunn is expected to be the starting goalkeeper for Scotland in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Analysis: Gunn has the most experience of the three goalkeepers in the Scottish squad, so it makes sense for him to get the nod over Liam Kelly and Craig Gordon. Gunn barely played for Nottingham Forest in the 2025/26 season, but his condition of being a Premier League veteran is enough to make him the Scots' first-choice shot-stopper.

Continues to recover
Gunn (knee) remains unavailable for the upcoming game versus Everton, as he "is a bit delayed" but "getting better" in manager Sean Dyche's words, Katie Stafford of BBC Sport reports.
Analysis: Gunn is currently a depth option behind Matz Sels, so his absence may continue to cause a limited impact on the squad's performance. The 29-year-old's exact return date is still unknown, but he might need a few more weeks to regain fitness after a lengthy injury period.
Not ready to return yet
Gunn (knee) remains out and won't be an option for Saturday's game at Liverpool, manager Sean Dyche told media Thursday. "Gunn is still recovering from a knee injury - it is sort of straightforward but is going to take a bit of time."
Analysis: It seems Gunn will be sidelined for quite some time while he works his way back from a knee injury. The veteran goalkeeper is a backup between the posts for the Hammers, so he's not expected to play a big role even when he's cleared to return.
Suffers knee injury
Gunn suffered a knee ligament injury and will be out for the time being, manager Sean Dyche told media during Thursday's pre-match press conference. "Gunn is not currently playing but is part of the squad, obviously, he's opened up his knee ligaments."
Analysis: The full extent of the injury hasn't been revealed yet, but it seems Gunn will be sidelined for a couple of games even in the best-case scenario. He's the third-string goalkeeper for Nottingham Forest, so his absence shouldn't affect many fantasy decisions any time soon.
