Returns to full training
Surman (knee) was a full participant in training Thursday, Jeremy Peterman of Cascadia FC reports.
Analysis: Surman had been recovering from an MCL sprain suffered in late September and could finally be coming close to a return to action. This marks another positive step in the defender's recovery after he previously had been limited to rehab work on the side. However, it doesn't mean he'll play right away, and it remains to be seen when he'll reclaim his starting role. Once he does, Joel Waterman and Kamal Miller will be at risk of dropping out of the main lineup.
Doing rehab on side
Surman (knee) had no equipment on his knee and was doing rehab work on the side at training Wednesday, Adam Susman of The Timber Review reports.
Analysis: Surman is roughly two weeks into a projected four-to-six-week recovery timeline after spraining his medial collateral ligament in training on September 22. The defender is no longer wearing any equipment on his knee, marking a clear sign of progress in his recovery process. He continues to work individually on the pitch and will need to integrate back into full team sessions before being considered for selection. His eventual comeback will bolster Portland's defensive options, as he had started every MLS match this season prior to his injury.
Out four to six weeks
Surman suffered an MCL sprain at training Tuesday and is expected to miss four to six weeks, Adam Susman of The Timber Review reports.
Analysis: Surman picked up an MCL sprain at training Tuesday, but subsequent scans showed no structural damage in his knee and he is expected to miss four to six weeks. That timeline nevertheless represents a major setback for Portland given Surman's status as an undisputed starter who has featured in every game so far. Joel Waterman and Kamal Miller are the likeliest options to form the regular center-back pairing during his absence, although Waterman's suspension leaves Eric Miller as a potential starter against San Jose on Saturday before the preferred partnership can be established.
Eligible to play vs. San Jose
Surman (not injury related) will play with the Timbers against San Jose on Saturday before linking up with the Canada national team for the rest of the international break, according to Timbers beat reporter Adam Susman.
Analysis: Having Surman at the back will be huge for the Timbers since the center-back has been a key player for Portland all season long, and the team is already down Joel Waterman due to suspension. This means Surman won't miss any game with the Timbers, as the team's next league match comes Oct. 10, while New Zealand will play Palestine (Sept. 24), China (Sept. 27) and Panama (Oct. 1).
Selected by New Zealand
Surman has been selected by the New Zealand national team for the upcoming international window between September and October.
Analysis: Surman has been one of the most reliable defenders on the Timbers roster this season, averaging 6.3 clearances, 1.5 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game across 26 starts in the 2026 MLS season. His absence will leave a void at center-back for Saturday's game against San Jose, but Eric Miller could be an option to take his place in the XI. Surman should return for the Oct. 10 away fixture at Sporting KC.
Scores late consolation goal
Surman scored one goal to go with one shot (one on goal) in Sunday's 2-1 defeat versus Chicago Fire.
Analysis: Surman would score the lone goal of the match for Portland as he got them on the board late into the contest, scoring in the 85th minute. This is the defender's first goal of the season, also having an assist. He would add one tackle, an intercpetion and three clearances in the defense.
Struggles in romp versus Belgium
Surman generated one tackle (zero won), three blocks and two clearances and committed one foul in Friday's 5-1 loss against Belgium.
Analysis: Surman floundered for most of the fixture, and especially in the second half, as the New Zealand backline offered little resistance to Belgium's waves of offense, leading to a large defeat and resulting in an early World Cup elimination. He has tallied exactly three blocks and one tackle (two total won) and multiple clearances, amassing 14, in all three contests, scoring one goal, but with no clean sheets.
Opens scoring Sunday
Surman scored one goal to go with one shot (one on goal) in Sunday's 3-1 defeat to Egypt.
Analysis: Surman opened up the scoring Sunday with a header in the 15th minute assisted by Tim Payne's cross. Surman found himself unmarked in the box, giving him an easy opportunity to score his third career international goal and his first at the World Cup. Despite the strong start and first half from the Kiwis, Surman and the defense struggled mightily in the second half. Egypt scored thrice in the second half to complete the comeback and then some, exposing the New Zealand defense that has now allowed five goals through two matches at this World Cup. Next up is the final group stage match versus Belgium on Friday, a must-win match for both sides.
One shot vs Iran in 2-2 draw
Surman recorded one shot (zero on goal) and one chance created in Monday's 2-2 draw against Iran.
Analysis: Surman made nine clearances, most by a New Zealand player in the match. The 22-year-old blocked three shots as well, also most by a New Zealand player. Surman also provided a key pass.
Starting against SKC
Surman (undisclosed) is in the initial lineup for Saturday's clash with Sporting Kansas City.
Analysis: Surman ended up avoiding a serious issue from the blow that forced him to leave the field last weekend against Real Salt Lake, so he'll continue to play his usual role in upcoming games. He'll now operate alongside Kamal Miller in central defense, leaving Alex Bonetig on the bench. The 22-year-old should remain valuable for his defensive output, currently leading the squad with an average of 7.1 clearances per game.
Replaced at halftime
Surman recorded two tackles (two won) and one clearance in Saturday's 2-0 defeat against Real Salt Lake. He was injured and subbed out in the 46th minute.
Analysis: Surman was seen receiving bandages as he was forced to be subbed start at the start of the second half. He's featured in the starting XI in all 10 MLS appearances for Portland, recording already 71 clearances, averaging about 7.1 per contest.
