Wirtz scored one goal in 45 minutes of play during his first preseason appearance ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, and coach Andoni Iraola commented after the match "I think they did really good. They played their first 45 minutes. Obviously Florian and Alex, because they were playing in the first half, they had an easier game or a better game".
Analysis: Wirtz is back with the club following his World Cup run in which he tallied three assists over four matches played for Germany. He's currently expected to operate in a No. 10 role in the Reds' lineup and could offer an excellent source of creative stats in that spot, as well as a reasonable attacking threat and occasional set-piece taker. Given his quality and the fact that he's now more adapted to the Premier League, it shouldn't be too difficult for him to surpass his 2025/26 totals of five goals and three assists as long as he stays healthy throughout the season.
In line for preseason debut
Wirtz is in line to feature in Sunday's friendly against Leeds United after joining Liverpool's US camp last weekend, according to coach Andoni Iraola. "With Florian, Ryan and Alex, they've been the ones arriving late. My idea is that the three of them will play the last game against Leeds. Probably we'll have to restrict their minutes"
Analysis: Wirtz's minutes will likely be limited early on given his later start compared to teammates already further into preseason work. He is expected to operate as the club's number 10 this season, and his vision and ability to unlock defenses from that central attacking role make him one of the squad's most important pieces. Wirtz's involvement is expected to grow over the next three weeks as preseason winds down.
