Smith logged 45 minutes for New England Revolution II on Saturday, according to New England Revolution reporter Caleb Pongratz.
Analysis: The Revs II head coach, Pablo Moreira, said the defender is "essentially in preseason" but called his performance "excellent." Smith is ramping up fitness, so it remains to be seen whether he'll be available to face the Galaxy on Saturday in the MLS or if he'll stay with the Revs II for another week.
Ramping up match fitness
Smith (not injury related) is not ready yet to play a match for New England due to his lack of match fitness, manager Marko Mitrovic said Thursday. "Tylon finished his season, didn't have a preseason and arrived here after a couple of months off."
Analysis: Mitrovic said Smith is "essentially in preseason mode," so he will need a few weeks, at best, to be ready to play. A return before the September international break could be a possibility for the defender.
Not available Sunday
Smith (not injury related) won't be an option Sunday against NYCFC, according to New England Revolution reporter Caleb Pongratz.
Analysis: Smith joined the Revs on loan from QPR on Aug. 13, so it's possible that he's still sorting out his visa-related paperwork to be an option. The defender's next chance to be available will be the Aug. 29 matchup at Columbus.
Loaned to New England
Smith joined New England on loan from QPR through the 2027 MLS Sprint Season, with an option to purchase, the club announced.
Analysis: Smith made 10 appearances across the senior and U21 levels at QPR after coming through Stellenbosch's academy in South Africa, where he won multiple titles and was named 2024-25 PSL Reserve League Player of the Season. He has been a standout for South Africa's U20 national team, earning Man of the Competition honors while leading the country to its first U20 AFCON title and helping the squad reach the round of 16 at the U20 World Cup. Smith is expected to add depth to New England's backline as he continues his development.
