O'Neill underwent successful surgery on his left ankle this past Monday and has begun his rehab, with estimated recovery period around four to six week timeline, according to the club.

Analysis: O'Neill has made 11 appearances with three assists in MLS this season, and the injury comes after he helped Australia reach the round of 32 at the World Cup, where he was named Player of the Match against Paraguay. O'Neill has been an undisputed starter in the engine room for NYCFC and his absence will allow Andres Perea to see more playing time in the coming weeks.

O'Neill had one shot (zero on goal), five crosses (two accurate) and one corner in Friday's 1-1 (5-3) penalty shootout defeat to Egypt.

Analysis: O'Neill constantly sent crosses into the box, but he wasn't particularly accurate. The central midfielder started and went the full 90 in every game for the Socceroos, tallying five chances created, two shots off target, 10 crosses, six tackles and eight clearances. He should remain a key starter in New York City's midfield in the second half of the 2026 MLS season.
