Rejoins team training

Soucek (ankle) has returned to portions of team training as he continues his recovery from the ankle ligament injury suffered while representing the Czech Republic at the World Cup, according to coach Nuno Espirito Santo, per The Athletic. "He is improving and has joined the group for parts of the sessions. He is also trying to complement that with sessions with the fitness coach so that when he returns fully he is in the right place."

Analysis: Soucek has been out for around 10 weeks since suffering the ankle ligament injury against Mexico on June 25, forcing him to miss the entirety of West Ham's preseason and the opening stretch of the campaign. His return to portions of team training represents a significant step, though he still needs additional conditioning work before being cleared for competitive action. Soucek remains an important part of Nuno's midfield plans despite increased competition from Arne Engels, Divine Mukasa and Lewis Orford, but Friday's clash against Wrexham is likely to come too soon.

Ankle injury under assessment

Soucek (ankle) will travel to London for further evaluation on the ligament damage he sustained to his left ankle during Czechia's final group match against Mexico at the World Cup, according to performance director Richard Collinge. "Tomas will return to London later this week for further evaluation and assessment on his ankle before a final decision is made on the best form of injury management, with the aim of returning to action as soon as possible."

Analysis: Soucek sustained the injury in Mexico City and the club has yet to determine the full extent of the damage or the best course of treatment ahead of the new season. Further updates on his recovery timeline will be provided once the assessment in London has been completed.
