Signs with San Diego
Bakambu has transferred to San Diego FC as a free agent after being released by Real Betis, the team announced Thursday.
Analysis: Bakambu is an experienced Congolese international who made three starts in the 2026 World Cup before moving to MLS for the rest of the year. His presence adds a viable option to lead San Diego's front line after they lacked a natural alternative to Marcus Ingvartsen (lower body) and ended up deploying midfielder Onni Valakari as a striker in recent action. The former Betis and Villarreal man scored four goals and three assists across 24 appearances (10 starts) last season between La Liga and Europa League competitions, and he'll look to improve on those totals if he finds a consistent role soon at his new squad.
Set to leave Real Betis
Bakambu will not continue at Real Betis next season, the club announced.
Analysis: Bakambu leaves Real Betis after being part of the squad that reached the UEFA Conference League final in 2025 and secured Champions League qualification last May. The DR Congo international continues his involvement at the World Cup as the Leopards will face England on Wednesday in the round of 32. Bakambu will return from the competition as a free agent and will be able to sign with the club of his choice to continue his career.
