Makes two interceptions in loss

Mandi registered one tackle (one won), two clearances and two interceptions in Tuesday's 3-0 loss to Argentina.

Analysis: Mandi logged the second-most interceptions and clearances during the loss in Algeria's debut. The centerback also won the second-most duels (six) on defense. That was his fourth World Cup appearance as one of three current players in the squad that featured in the country's last participation in Brazil 2014.

Leader in defense for Algeria

Mandi is the undisputed starter in Algeria's defense heading into the World Cup.

Analysis: Mandi heads into the World Cup on the back of an impressive campaign with Lille in Ligue 1, where he played a key role in helping the club secure a Champions League spot for next season. The center back arrives as the most experienced defender in Algeria's backline and will be expected to provide leadership and defensive solidity through what is one of the tougher groups at this tournament. His ability to produce high defensive numbers in clearances and tackles will be particularly valuable in the physically demanding fixtures against Argentina and Austria, where Algeria are likely to absorb significant pressure for long spells. In games where Algeria can control possession, such as the Jordan fixture, his passing accuracy and comfort with long balls give Vladimir Petkovic a reliable option to play out from the back and switch the point of attack. Mandi is also a genuine aerial threat from set pieces at the other end, having now scored eight goals for Algeria across his international career, the latest coming in the most recent friendly against Bolivia, confirming his threat from dead ball situations remains as sharp as ever heading into the tournament. With experience, defensive quality, and a goal threat to his name, he is one of the more complete center backs Algeria have fielded at a World Cup.
