Withdraws from Switzerland squad
Xhaka (not injury related) has admitted to forging a Covid-19 vaccination certificate and has been left out of Switzerland's squad for the upcoming international break, according to Philip Buckingham of The Athletic.
Analysis: Xhaka apologized for what he called a mistake made during a period of emotional turmoil, saying he had deep mistrust of the vaccine at the time and obtained a certificate rather than seeking answers through proper channels. The Lucerne public prosecutor's office has opened proceedings, with Xhaka expected to be questioned in early October, and the Swiss federation said the decision to leave him out of the training camp for the Nations League games against North Macedonia, Scotland and Slovenia was made jointly with the player, with the situation to be reassessed once the international window concludes.
Delivers five crosses
Xhaka registered five crosses (two accurate) and three corners in Saturday's 2-0 loss to Arsenal. In addition, he was given a yellow card in the 69th minute.
Analysis: Xhaka handled a significant portion of Sunderland's dead-ball responsibility, taking three corners and producing a team-high five crosses. Two of those deliveries found their target, giving the midfielder some creative involvement despite finishing without a goal or assist. His combination of set-piece duties and a guaranteed central role should continue to provide a steady source of crossing opportunities.
