Martinez (knee) is back among the substitutes in Friday's game versus Nashville.
Analysis: Martinez has been included in the match squad for the first time this season following his recovery from an ACL tear. While he's unlikely to see plenty of minutes right away, his return is very positive news for the team, considering he was one of their primary attacking threats in past campaigns, scoring 17 and 19 goals during the 2024 and 2025 campaigns, respectively. He'll push for playing time in Luighi's place heading into the final stages of the regular season.
Set to return to full training
Martinez (knee) will return to full training Monday, head coach Pascal Jansen told Glenn Crooks of NYCFC Network.
Analysis: Martinez has yet to play this season after suffering an ACL injury last year while representing the Costa Rica national team. His return to the side will be huge for NYCFC, as he has scored 36 goals in the past two MLS seasons. He'll need some time to regain match fitness, but a return at some point in September looks plausible.
Back on grass
Martinez (knee) was seen back on the grass and training individually for the first time since his ACL injury.
Analysis: Martinez is making his first steps of recovery as he trained for the first time since his ACL surgery back in December. It may be a bit more time for the forward to return to action, as he continues to be on track for a return before the end of the 2026 MLS season.
